Definition of Bribery

Under Michigan law, bribery is defined as offering, promising or agreeing to the exchange of money, services or goods for the purpose of influencing a public official’s performance of his or her duty.

Bribery may relate to the following:

  • Public officials
  • Peace officers
  • Judges
  • Jurors
  • Sports officials

For example, a driver may attempt to bribe a police officer to get out of a speeding ticket. A construction company owner may attempt to bribe a public official to ensure that he or she is given a certain government project. Bribery may relate to bribery of a public official.

To be convicted of bribery, the actual exchange of money or the performance of the public act need not have taken place in order for the prosecution to obtain a conviction. The attempt or offer alone may be enough to result in bribery charges and a conviction. This is one of the many reasons it is so important that you work with a Michigan bribery defense attorney if you have been accused of this serious offense.
